I'm using MusicKit for DRM track playback in my iOS app and a third party library to play local user-owned music on the file system and from the music library.
This app is also supporting accessory devices that offer Bluetooth remote media control.
The wish is to achieve parity between how the remote interacts with user owned music and the DRM / cloud / Apple Music tracks in my application music player.
Track navigation, app volume (rather than system volume), and scrubbing need to work consistently on a mix of tracks which could alternate DRM and cloud status within one album or playlist.
Apple Music queue and track pickers are not useful tools in my app.
How can I support playing DRM and Apple Music tracks while not surrendering the remote control features to the system?

[Note: this issue was happening on a main testing device, and after testing the same code on other devices, this issue is only happening on 1 out of 4 devices]
We are successfully getting a MusicCatalogResourceResponse for every song ID where we make the MusicCatalogResourceRequest. We are able to display the song title, artist name, and album artwork for each Song in the response.
However - when we go to play the song, there are some songs that play, and several songs that do not play. For the songs that don't play, the console shows “Failed to prepareToPlay error=<MPMusicPlayerControllerErrorDomain.6 "Failed to prepare to play" {}>”
let musicPlayer = ApplicationMusicPlayer.shared
func playSong(_ song: Song) {
musicPlayer.queue = [song]
Task {
try await musicPlayer.prepareToPlay()
try await musicPlayer.play()
}
Is there anything else we can investigate about what may be causing specific song IDs not to play on this specific device?
Even if we remove line 6 musicPlayer.prepareToPlay() we still see the same console error when running playSong with the Songs that don't work.
It is always the same song IDs that we can play and always the same song IDs that we cannot get to play, even trying them across different projects with different bundle identifiers.
We can tap to play a song that works, and it starts playing immediately. Then tap a song that doesn't work, and nothing happens. Then back to a song that works. It's consistent which songs succeed and fail on this device.
Perhaps there is an issue specific to this very iPad when it comes to certain specific songs, but we'd like to be confident that an app relying on MusicKit will be able to play songs that have been successfully loaded with a MusicCatalogResourceResponse.
Thanks for any help or suggestions about what we may be able to investigate further on the device or what we should consider when launching an app that expects anyone with Apple Music to be able to listen to any of the songs loaded by the app.
Specific iPad details: iPad Pro (12.9-inch) (6th generation) running iPadOS 26.4 Beta
Two of the song IDs that won't play on this iPad (even though we can access and display their album artwork and all other information): 943204000 and 1441164805
I'm trying to enable Music Kit for my key however I keep seeing this message "There are no identifiers available that can be associated with the key" even though my identifier has music kit enabled. Can someone help out with this?
Hello, I'm working on a MusicKit based SwiftUI app. I've integrated AirPlay using the AVRoutePickerView like so:
struct UIKitAirPlayPickerView: UIViewRepresentable {
func makeUIView(context: Context) -> AVRoutePickerView {
let routePickerView = AVRoutePickerView()
routePickerView.prioritizesVideoDevices = false
return routePickerView
}
func updateUIView(_ uiView: AVRoutePickerView, context: Context) {}
}
The AirPlay menu appears as expected, and selecting an AirPlay device functions as expected. I'm currently sending audio from my app to a HomePod. However, the state of the AVRoutePickerView does not reflect the playback state. There is no cover art and it says "Not Playing". When my device is locked, my lock screen shows the album art, metadata and AirPlay routing as expected.
My app uses the ApplicationMusicPlayer however I encounter the same behavior using the SystemMusicPlayer.
Any guidance on how to troubleshoot this? Is there any other way to integrate the system AirPlay picker into my app, or is this my only option?
Thank you for reading.
Hi everyone,
I am attempting to generate an Ad Hoc provisioning profile for my iOS app that includes MusicKit capabilities, but the generated .mobileprovision file consistently lacks the required entitlement, despite the configuration appearing correct in the developer portal.
The Issue:
I have enabled MusicKit under the "App Services" tab for my App ID. I have saved this configuration, verified it is checked in the UI, and then regenerated and downloaded my provisioning profile.
However, when I inspect the internal contents of the .mobileprovision file, the Entitlements dictionary does not contain the com.apple.developer.music-kit key. It only contains the standard keys (Team ID, App ID, etc.).
Steps Taken:
Created a brand new App ID to rule out legacy data issues.
Explicitly enabled "MusicKit" under the App Services tab for this new identifier.
Created a fresh Ad Hoc Distribution profile linked to this new ID.
Downloaded the profile and inspected the file structure: the MusicKit entitlement is completely absent.
Attempted toggling the service off and on, saving, and regenerating the profile multiple times.
Has anyone experienced a specific bug where "App Services" (like MusicKit) fail to propagate to the Provisioning Profile generator? Is there a secondary "Capability" (e.g., Media Library) that must also be enabled to trigger the inclusion of the MusicKit entitlement?
Any guidance would be appreciated.
I've filed this as FB21446798 but figured I'd post here too.
In the first build of macOS 26.3, playback via ApplicationMusicPlayer is completely broken. When starting playback of anything at all, the console shows the following error:
applicationController: xpc service connection interrupted
Failed to obtain remoteObject: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=4099 "The connection to service created from an endpoint was invalidated from this process." UserInfo={NSDebugDescription=The connection to service created from an endpoint was invalidated from this process.}
Failed to prepareToPlay with error: Error Domain=MPMusicPlayerControllerErrorDomain Code=10 "(null)" UserInfo={NSUnderlyingError=0xc92910ff0 {Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=4099 "The connection to service created from an endpoint was invalidated from this process." UserInfo={NSDebugDescription=The connection to service created from an endpoint was invalidated from this process.}}}
In addition, several crash logs for RemotePlayerService are generated, showing my app as the parent process.
This issue is 100% repeatable. No matter how I load the queue, whether it’s catalog or library content, any variation I can think of all fails like this.
I really hope this can be fixed before 26.3 comes out, otherwise my app will be totally unusable. 😅
Hello,
I am wondering how one can play music videos (with the actual video playing) with the ApplicationMusicPlayer using MusicKit for Swift?
There is not much documentation on this, so any help would be appreciated.

Apple Music API
wwdc21-10291

I’m trying to build a playlist editor on macOS. I can create playlists via the Apple Music HTTP API, but DELETE always returns 401 even immediately after creation with
the same tokens.
Minimal repro:
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail
BASE_URL="https://api.music.apple.com/v1"
PLAYLIST_NAME="${PLAYLIST_NAME:-blah}"
: "${APPLE_MUSIC_DEV_TOKEN:?}"
: "${APPLE_MUSIC_USER_TOKEN:?}"
create_body="$(mktemp)"
delete_body="$(mktemp)"
trap 'rm -f "$create_body" "$delete_body"' EXIT
curl -sS --compressed -o "$create_body" -w "Create status: %{http_code}\n" \
-X POST "${BASE_URL}/me/library/playlists" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer ${APPLE_MUSIC_DEV_TOKEN}" \
-H "Music-User-Token: ${APPLE_MUSIC_USER_TOKEN}" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d "{\"attributes\":{\"name\":\"${PLAYLIST_NAME}\"}}"
playlist_id="$(python3 - "$create_body" <<'PY'
import json, sys
with open(sys.argv[1], "r", encoding="utf-8") as f:
data = json.load(f)
print(data["data"][0]["id"])
PY
)"
curl -sS --compressed -o "$delete_body" -w "Delete status: %{http_code}\n" \
-X DELETE "${BASE_URL}/me/library/playlists/${playlist_id}" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer ${APPLE_MUSIC_DEV_TOKEN}" \
-H "Music-User-Token: ${APPLE_MUSIC_USER_TOKEN}" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json"
I capture the response bodies like this:
cat "$create_body"
cat "$delete_body"
Result:
Create: 201
Delete: 401
I also checked the latest macOS SDK’s MusicKit interfaces and MusicLibrary.createPlaylist/edit/add(to:) are marked @available(macOS, unavailable), so I can’t create/
delete via MusicKit on macOS either.
Question: How can I implement a playlist editor on macOS (create/delete/modify) if:
MusicKit write APIs are unavailable on macOS, and
The HTTP API can create but DELETE returns 401?
Any guidance or official workaround would be hugely appreciated.
Hi,Since today, we are no more able to do DELETE/PUT request on the Apple Music API.So, we can't update a playlist details, delete a playlist, delete tracks in playlist, delete tracks in library...Old methods allowed are now returning only an HTTP Code 403.Why this change in the Apple Music API ? We can hope that will be back soon ?
Has anyone seen this issue?
We have a user who changed their Apple ID password about 5 days ago. Now when they authenticate via MusicKit JS:
authorize() succeeds and returns a user token
Immediately calling any /me/ endpoint returns 403 "Invalid authentication" (code 40300)
Developer token works fine on catalog endpoints
User has active Apple Music subscription
Other users work fine through the same flow
App doesn't appear in user's "Apps Using Your Apple ID"
We've tried:
Calling unauthorize() before authorize()
Clearing localStorage/sessionStorage/cookies
Multiple re-auth attempts over several days
The token is freshly issued but Apple's API immediately rejects it.
Anyone encountered this after a password change? Any workarounds?
Hi team,
In the Apple Music Feed datasets, we've noticed some unexpected values in the song and album tables.
The primaryartists column from either song or album may contain a "non-default" artist name such as the katakana name shown in the example below:
select id, name, namedefault, primaryartists from amf_song where id = '1698723329'
id | name | namedefault | primaryartists
----------------------------------------
1698723329 | {default=California} | California | [{id=1264818718, name=チャペル・ローン}]
select * from amf_artist where id = '1264818718'
id | name | namedefault | namepronunciation |
----------------------------------------------
1264818718 | {default=Chappell Roan, ja=チャペル・ローン} | Chappell Roan | {ja=チャペルローン} |
Shouldn't the primaryartists column be showing the namedefault instead of the Japanese language version?
When can we expect this bug to resolved?
Thanks,
I am developing a SWIFITUI app that transfers playlists between Apple Music and Spotify but I am not directly create my requests to those companies APIs. I have my own backend. But when fetching users playlists due to "https://api.music.apple.com/v1/me/library/playlists" the response is 403 all the time. I tried many ways including creating new DevToken and UserToken when user login and sending those tokens in headers with Authorization and Music-User-Token. What else can be the problem?
Note: My team ids in Xcode and apple developer portal seems different. Maybe this is the problem.
Hi everyone,
after enabling CloudKit in my project, my app started showing conflicts between MusicKit and CloudKit entitlements — and now Xcode is failing to generate the provisioning profile entirely.
Current issue (Signing / Provisioning Profile Failure)
Xcode shows this error:
“Provisioning profile ‘iOS Team Provisioning Profile: team8.groovefy.dev’ doesn’t include the entitlements:
com.apple.developer.media-library,
com.apple.developer.music-user-token,
com.apple.developer.musickit,
com.apple.developer.playable-content,
com.apple.security.exception.mach-lookup.global-name”
Automatic signing fails, and Xcode cannot create or update the provisioning profile.
This started right after CloudKit was enabled in the project.
Context
Before enabling CloudKit, MusicKit worked normally, including Apple Music authentication and playlist creation.
After activating CloudKit capabilities:
MusicKit stopped generating the Apple Music user token
Playlist creation broke
Now the provisioning profile cannot be rebuilt because the required MusicKit-related entitlements are no longer included
Even after removing CloudKit entirely, the issue persists — as if the App ID or entitlements on the server side became inconsistent or corrupted.
I already tried:
Recreating App Identifier
Recreating provisioning profiles
Resetting capabilities
Cleaning and reinitializing the Xcode project settings
But Xcode still refuses to generate a valid provisioning profile that includes the MusicKit entitlements.
Summary
Enabling CloudKit caused MusicKit entitlements to collide, and now the provisioning profile no longer includes the required MusicKit entitlements — preventing the app from signing, running, or creating playlists.
If anyone has faced this type of entitlements/provisioning corruption or knows how to reset the App ID entitlements on Apple’s side, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi there,
I recently launched a dj app to the mac app store, and was wondering how I could access songs for mixing purposes via Apple Music just like how serato, rekordbox, djay, and other DJ apps do?
Thanks,
Gunek
Hi everyone,
We’re currently developing a music-based app using MusicKit, and we recently noticed that iOS 26 beta introduces a new “Automix” feature in the Apple Music app. This enables seamless DJ-style transitions between songs—beyond the standard crossfade functionality.
We’re trying to understand:
Will this Automix feature be accessible to third-party apps that use MusicKit?
If not available in the initial iOS 26 release, is there a plan to expose it through public APIs in a future update?
Is there any technical documentation, WWDC session, or roadmap info regarding Automix support via MusicKit?
This functionality would be a significant enhancement for our app, especially for intelligent audio transitions and curated playlists.
Thanks.
Just updated my computer, phone, and dev tools to the latest versions of everything. Now when I run my app in a previously-working simulator (iPhone 16 w. iOS 18.5) I get:
Failed retrieving MusicKit tokens: fetching the developer token is not supported in the simulator when running on this version of macOS; please upgrade your Mac to macOS Ventura.
Also:
<ICCloudServiceStatusMonitor: 0x600003320e60>: Invoking 1 completion handler for MusicKit tokens. error=<ICError.DeveloperTokenFetchingFailed (-8200) "Failed to fetch media token from <AMSMediaTokenService: 0x6000029049a0>." { underlyingErrors: [ <AMSErrorDomain.300 "Token request encoding failed The token request encoder finished with an error." { userInfo: { AMSDescription : "Token request encoding failed", AMSFailureReason : "The token request encoder finished with an error." }; underlyingErrors: [ <AMSErrorDomain.5 "Anisette Failed Platform not supported" { userInfo: { AMSDescription : "Anisette Failed", AMSFailureReason : "Platform not supported" };
Anybody know what gives here? The Ventura message is absurd because I'm on Tahoe 26.1. The same code works on a physical phone running iOS 26.
If I make a request to https://api.music.apple.com/v1/storefronts/us with the proper developer jwt token in the header, I receive the a successful response with a list of store fronts. If I remove the token, I do get back a 401 error.
If I call any other catalog base query, I am getting back a 500 error.
For instance: https://api.music.apple.com/v1/catalog/us/albums/310730204
returns a 500 error with the body being
{"message":"An unexpected error occurred"}
I'm not sure what I can do to fix this. Please help.
My app is properly configured with MusicKit. I've generated a JWT using my valid credentials (Team ID, Key ID, private key), and I’ve ensured the time settings are correct via NTP.
When I call:
https://api.music.apple.com/v1/catalog/jp/search?term=ado&types=songs
I consistently receive a 500 Internal Server Error.
The JWT is generated using ES256 with valid iat and exp values. I’ve confirmed the token decodes properly using jwt.io, and it's passed via the Authorization: Bearer header.
Things I’ve confirmed:
Key ID, Team ID, private key are correct
App ID is configured with MusicKit capability
JWT is generated and signed correctly
macOS time is synced via NTP
Used both curl and Python to test — same result
Is there anything else I should check on the Apple Developer Console (like App ID, Certificates, or provisioning profile)?
Or could this be a backend issue on Apple’s side?
Any guidance would be appreciated.
I use
htttps://api.music.apple.com/v1/me/library/playlists/${playlistId}/tracks
to add tracks to a playlist I created.
How do I DELETE tracks from the playlist?
The documentation does not mention a method for this. I have tried calling DELETE methods in various combinations but nothing seems to work.
Is this possible?
Hi,
I’m an iOS developer building an app with an use case that needs advanced playback on Apple Music subscription streams, specifically:
• Real-time tempo change (BPM) during playback — i.e., time-stretch with key-lock, not just crossfade.
• Beat-matched transitions between tracks.
From what I can tell, this capability seems to exist only for approved partners and isn’t available through public MusicKit.
Question: What’s the official request path to be evaluated for that restricted partner entitlement (application form, questionnaire, NDA, or internal team/BD contact)? If the entitlement identifier is internal, how can I get my account routed to the right Apple Music team?
For reference, publicly announced partners include Algoriddim djay, Serato DJ Pro, rekordbox (AlphaTheta), and Engine DJ—all of which appear to implement mixing features that imply advanced playback (tempo/beat-matching) on Apple Music content. I’d prefer not to share product details publicly for the moment and can provide specifics privately if needed.
Thanks in advance!
